Puzzle & Dragons for iOS is a decent RPG employing match 3 mechanics to trigger fantasy combat play. This one is suitable for little ones, with a pleasing soundtrack that shouldn't drive parents nuts with monotonous repetition or relentless donation screens.
Puzzle & Dragons has a lot going for it as a kid's game, however, more seasoned players would find this one to be highly crude and boring. The app presents in portrait mode to reveal a fairly static looking match 3 game environment. Along the top of the screen, you'll see an array of weird and goofy enemies, and that's where the battles unfold. The remainder of the screen is populated with a match 3 style game board. Make matches of 3 or more to launch attacks against the enemies above, trigger cool power ups, combination attacks, and replenish your own health. The play is somewhat dynamic, but highly crude as well.
The controls enlist screen swipes and slides to make your matches, and they functioned well. The graphics and animation are highly crude and are in need of some serious refinement. The sounds are actually pleasing and innocuous, inviting repeat play without the promise of mind numbing repetition that will ring through your ears long after the game is over.
Puzzle & Dragons has some decent elements, but there simply isn't much to be excited about here. This one is thoroughly predictable and boring, however, it just might captivate kids who aren't savvy enough yet to know better
