Retro combat game with some decent replay value

METAL SLUG DEFENSE for iOS is a straightforward combat game that reminds me of an arcade classic. Destroy your enemy's portal before they destroy yours. The play is crude and rudimentary, yet remains entertaining and fun too.

METAL SLUG DEFENSE isn't the most refined game around, however, it holds a special place in my heart because it reminds me of my old arcade days. The app presents in landscape mode to deliver a solidly retro gaming environment. This isn't exactly a side-scrolling game, so much as it just possesses some lateral movement in an effort to expand the game a little beyond the edges of your screen. On the left are the good guys, on the right is your enemy. Your mission, is to deploy troops that engage enemies in head-to-head combat. You can toss grenades, build barricades and launch tanks; all in a retro blaze of glory. Destroy your enemy's portal before they destroy yours, and win the round to fight another day. Each level is highly repetitive, with only the background changing the scene slightly. Other than that, it's just straight up monotonous warfare.

The controls employ screen taps to deploy troops and toss grenades, and they were occasionally unresponsive. The graphics are sensory overload, with poor details that make it hard to discern one element from another. The animation is crude, choppy and deliciously retro. The sounds are minimal but effective for a game like this.

METAL SLUG DEFENSE will be thoroughly enjoyed by retro gaming fans, while the rest may wonder what the fuss is all about.
